Insta360 is developing two interchangeable-lens cameras, founder and CEO JK Liu told Mynavi News in an interview reported by PetaPixel and other outlets. That makes the project real enough to follow, but it remains a development confirmation rather than a launch: Insta360 has not announced a mount, sensor, price, shipping date, or finished design.
Liu said the two cameras will have “completely different characteristics,” and that one will use a shape “you’ve never even considered before.” He also said Insta360 is exploring new technology and AI to make interchangeable-lens cameras easier to operate, with the broader idea that people should experience the moment while the camera handles more of the mechanics of capture.
That combination is the interesting part. Insta360 has built its name around 360 cameras, action cameras, pocket gimbals, and compact designs, so it has plenty of experience simplifying capture and reframing footage. That experience doesn’t establish mirrorless autofocus, clean low-light performance, lens communication, stabilization, audio, thermals, or an efficient editing workflow. Those are the details that decide whether a system camera earns space in a compact kit.
CP+ is a possible preview, not a release date
Liu reportedly said Insta360 may be able to show a prototype at CP+ in Yokohama in February 2027. The wording matters: this supports a possible prototype showing, not a confirmed appearance, retail launch, or shipping timetable. One secondary headline has described the camera as “coming” to CP+ 2027, but the underlying account is conditional.
A prototype appearance would answer only some of the immediate questions. Insta360 has not confirmed either lens mount or the sensor format, and the company has not published resolution, processor, codecs, bit depth, frame rates, storage, recording limits, battery behavior, stabilization method, microphone support, or price. There is also no indication yet of how much the cameras would depend on Insta360’s mobile apps or what their desktop workflow would look like.
The Z1 rumor is a separate thread
A previously shown prototype has been identified in separate reporting as the Z1, with a Micro Four Thirds-format sensor and an M4/3 Olympus 14-42mm lens. Those details describe a reported prototype, not an official confirmation that either of the two cameras Liu discussed will use Micro Four Thirds hardware.
Leaks and interpretations have also suggested a Micro Four Thirds mount and other specifications, but Insta360 has not confirmed them. The Z1 may eventually prove related to this project, yet there is not enough in the public record to connect it confidently to one of the two promised cameras. Treating the leaked hardware as settled would turn the most useful news here—a two-camera commitment—into a spec-sheet rumor.
There’s no purchase reason to wait yet
For someone already filming with a Pocket 3, GoPro Hero 13, or Insta360 X4, this announcement doesn’t establish a meaningful upgrade. The future cameras could offer a more flexible lens system or a genuinely easier way to use interchangeable lenses, but neither benefit has been demonstrated, priced, or tied to a release window.
The project is worth watching because it could move Insta360 from fixed-lens action and pocket cameras into a system-camera category, where lens choice and a larger sensor can change what a small kit is capable of. For now, though, the only firm commitment is that two different cameras are being developed. Until Insta360 shows what it means by easier operation—and whether the unusual shape solves a real shooting problem—the current cameras remain the known quantities.
