Liu said the two cameras will have “completely different characteristics,” and that one will use a shape “you’ve never even considered before.” He also said Insta360 is exploring new technology and AI to make interchangeable-lens cameras easier to operate, with the broader idea that people should experience the moment while the camera handles more of the mechanics of capture.

That combination is the interesting part. Insta360 has built its name around 360 cameras, action cameras, pocket gimbals, and compact designs, so it has plenty of experience simplifying capture and reframing footage. That experience doesn’t establish mirrorless autofocus, clean low-light performance, lens communication, stabilization, audio, thermals, or an efficient editing workflow. Those are the details that decide whether a system camera earns space in a compact kit.

CP+ is a possible preview, not a release date

Liu reportedly said Insta360 may be able to show a prototype at CP+ in Yokohama in February 2027. The wording matters: this supports a possible prototype showing, not a confirmed appearance, retail launch, or shipping timetable. One secondary headline has described the camera as “coming” to CP+ 2027, but the underlying account is conditional.

A prototype appearance would answer only some of the immediate questions. Insta360 has not confirmed either lens mount or the sensor format, and the company has not published resolution, processor, codecs, bit depth, frame rates, storage, recording limits, battery behavior, stabilization method, microphone support, or price. There is also no indication yet of how much the cameras would depend on Insta360’s mobile apps or what their desktop workflow would look like.

The Z1 rumor is a separate thread

A previously shown prototype has been identified in separate reporting as the Z1, with a Micro Four Thirds-format sensor and an M4/3 Olympus 14-42mm lens. Those details describe a reported prototype, not an official confirmation that either of the two cameras Liu discussed will use Micro Four Thirds hardware.

Leaks and interpretations have also suggested a Micro Four Thirds mount and other specifications, but Insta360 has not confirmed them. The Z1 may eventually prove related to this project, yet there is not enough in the public record to connect it confidently to one of the two promised cameras. Treating the leaked hardware as settled would turn the most useful news here—a two-camera commitment—into a spec-sheet rumor.

There’s no purchase reason to wait yet

For someone already filming with a Pocket 3, GoPro Hero 13, or Insta360 X4, this announcement doesn’t establish a meaningful upgrade. The future cameras could offer a more flexible lens system or a genuinely easier way to use interchangeable lenses, but neither benefit has been demonstrated, priced, or tied to a release window.

The project is worth watching because it could move Insta360 from fixed-lens action and pocket cameras into a system-camera category, where lens choice and a larger sensor can change what a small kit is capable of. For now, though, the only firm commitment is that two different cameras are being developed. Until Insta360 shows what it means by easier operation—and whether the unusual shape solves a real shooting problem—the current cameras remain the known quantities.

The launch closes the hardware rumor arc. It doesn’t answer the question US buyers need answered: DJI has announced no US price, release date, storefront listing, warranty coverage or repair program for the Osmo 360 II. A China-market import may be possible, but it should be treated as unsupported until DJI says otherwise.

Replaceable glass changes the ownership calculation

The Osmo 360’s exposed lenses take the risk out of a normal action-camera purchase and put it directly on the camera. A scratch or impact can affect every angle captured by the two lenses, including footage that gets reframed later. Reporting on the first-generation model identified its fixed lenses as a major practical limitation; the II’s user-replaceable design attacks that limitation more directly than another incremental resolution bump.

The details that determine whether this is genuinely useful remain unknown. The launch coverage does not establish whether swapping a lens requires special tools, how the waterproof seal is restored, whether calibration is needed, what a replacement kit costs or how the work affects the warranty. DJI’s existing China service information lists lens-replacement prices for the original Osmo 360, but that does not confirm a self-service procedure or pricing for the II.

DJI has reportedly claimed that an ion-sputtered lens coating survived 2,000 steel-wool rubs in laboratory testing without affecting image quality. That is a manufacturer-reported lab claim, not evidence of resistance to a drop onto gravel, sand worked into a ride bag or a direct impact. Replaceability still matters because exposed glass eventually meets something worse than a test material.

8K/60p is real; the visible payoff is still unproven

The Osmo 360 II records native 8K/60p panoramic video at 7,680 × 3,840 pixels, up from the original camera’s reported 8K/50p ceiling. It also records 6K panoramic video at up to 60p, 4K single-lens video at up to 60p, Boost Video at up to 4K/120p and panoramic slow motion at up to 4K/240p.

Those modes give fast-moving footage more frame-rate headroom, but the supplied launch coverage contains no controlled test footage or measurements showing that 8K/60p delivers better detail, stitching, low-light footage, stabilization or sustained endurance than the original. The specification is confirmed; the workflow and image-quality advantage is not.

The camera’s other headline imaging claims include HDR panoramic stills up to 120 megapixels, RAW photography and dual 1/1.1-inch-equivalent imaging areas with f/1.9 apertures, 2.4μm pixels and an ISO range of 100–51,200. DJI reports up to 14.5 stops of dynamic range, with D-Log M rated at 13.5 stops. Those numbers describe potential, not independent evidence of clean low-light footage or a lighter post-production burden.

The practical package is familiar, with useful built-in storage

Launch coverage reports 128GB of internal storage, with about 105GB usable, alongside microSD support up to 1TB. That usable internal space could make a meaningful difference on a trip when a card fills or a phone offload is inconvenient, though the reporting does not establish transfer speeds or the app experience.

The battery is rated at 2,150mAh, and DJI claims up to 100 minutes of continuous 8K/30p recording under specified laboratory conditions. DJI also claims 80% charging in 22 minutes with a 30W-or-higher USB charger. Those figures don’t establish runtime at 8K/60p, in cold weather or with stabilization and other processing enabled, so spare-battery planning still depends on testing.

China pricing is clear; US buying is not

The standard package is reported at ¥3,299 in mainland China. Hong Kong pricing is listed separately at HK$3,899 for the standard model and HK$4,699 for the Adventure Combo; those are different markets, not conflicting US-equivalent prices.

Imaging Resource and NEW CAMERA describe the rollout as limited to China for now. An FCC authorization reportedly exists for the camera, but regulatory approval does not establish a US retail launch, MSRP, shipping date, warranty commitment or supply of replacement lenses. The supplied reporting also does not settle whether a China unit would have region-specific firmware, activation, language, app or feature restrictions.

That leaves US buyers with no confirmed supported path to purchase or repair. The launch confirms a better-equipped trip camera. It does not yet confirm a cleaner dusk hike, better underwater footage, or a reliably simpler path from 360 capture to an edited video. For X4 owners, the upgrade case is clearest when 8K/50fps, single-lens shooting or built-in storage fixes a problem today; otherwise, the sensible decision is to wait for broader field testing. The meaningful hardware changes are clear

The X6 records 360-degree video at up to 8K/50fps. That higher frame rate matters most for runners, riders and other moving subjects: it gives fast motion more temporal detail than the X5’s headline 8K/30fps mode, while the extra resolution still gives reframing more room than a conventional action camera.

Its dual custom Sony 1/1.1-inch square sensors are specified as 33% larger in area than the X5’s sensors. Insta360 says they take in around four times as much light per frame, but that is a manufacturer claim about the imaging system, not an independent image-quality result. The sensor size is 1/1.1-inch; the company’s “full 1-inch” language should not be read as a literal full one-inch sensor specification.

The X6 also works as a conventional action camera, recording up to 5K/60fps through its single-lens mode. The widest listed 170-degree view is limited to 5K/30fps, while 5K/60fps is listed with a 132-degree view. Alongside full 360 capture and single-lens shooting, InstaFrame 2.0 can create flat 4K video in-camera while tracking people, pets and objects. That three-mode setup is the strongest argument for carrying one X6 instead of packing a 360 camera and a separate action camera.

Low light is the upgrade claim that still needs proof

The larger sensors and new processing are designed to improve difficult-light footage, and they could make the X6 more useful in forest shade, dusk scenes, night markets and motorcycle rides. The available launch reporting, including The Verge’s account of the hardware and denoising changes, does not include a controlled X6-versus-X4 field comparison.

That leaves important practical questions open: whether 8K/50fps remains usable as light falls, how much detail noise reduction preserves at the edges, and what bitrate, shutter, heat and recording-duration limits apply. The X6 is therefore a confirmed specification upgrade, but not yet a proven low-light upgrade.

The waterproof rating is higher, with the important caveat in the accessory

Insta360 rates the bare X6 for underwater use to 20 meters. Reaching 60 meters requires the separate Invisible Dive Case Pro. The company says the case stays outside the visible stitch line, but the supplied evidence does not independently verify underwater stitching, color, condensation resistance or lens-guard behavior.

That distinction matters for travel and action shooters: the headline 60-meter figure describes a camera-plus-case setup, not the camera by itself. The launch record also does not establish whether the X6 produces materially better underwater results than the X4.

InstaFrame could change the edit, but the app remains an open question

The X6’s most useful workflow promise is InstaFrame 2.0’s in-camera flat 4K output, which removes a separate reframing step for clips where the automatic framing is good enough. Auto Edit 2.0 can assemble framing, camera movement, cuts, music and transitions in one tap, while AI Director analyzes footage as the camera charges. Moments Pro adds optional cloud-based automation, and Insta360 Studio remains free on Mac and Windows.

Those features establish more automation, not a measured reduction in editing time. The launch materials provide no processing-time, export-reliability or long-form workflow comparison with the X4, and they do not establish codec details or Resolve performance. The X6 retains 47GB of usable built-in storage from 64GB total, which is useful insurance when a trip runs past the spare-card plan, but it does not answer the larger question of how quickly footage becomes a finished video.

The $699.99 decision depends on the problem being solved

The X6 makes the clearest case over an older X4 when the priority is 8K/50fps motion, a single-lens 5K/60fps option, three cameras’ worth of capture modes in one body, or internal storage for travel. Those are concrete changes that affect what can be shot and what needs to be carried.

The price also changes the comparison with the X5. Insta360 says the X6 can record for up to 140 minutes, but that claim applies to 8K/30fps 360 recording rather than the headline 8K/50fps mode. The public launch material does not establish what the $699.99 Standard Bundle includes for an X5 owner who may need a battery, case, lens guards or charging cable.

Until independent testing covers dusk trails, moving low-light scenes, underwater capture and the full 360-to-edit path, the X6 earns the description “better-equipped” more securely than “better footage.” That makes waiting a defensible choice for X4 owners whose current camera still meets their shooting needs.

A Bucharest retail shop reportedly sold a finished X6 unit weeks ahead of schedule. Amazon listings and promotional lifestyle images had appeared before the launch date, adding to the evidence that retail stock and marketing materials are already moving. Those appearances establish pre-launch availability of the product and packaging; they do not establish that every region will ship on August 12 or that the software is ready everywhere.

Insta360 has not provided a confirmed final price, packaging breakdown, or regional shipping schedule in the reporting available for this story. The X6 may be physically ready for retailers while still requiring an app update, firmware release, or regional storefront preparation before buyers can use it normally.

The hardware promise remains a rumor until launch

Earlier leaks have pointed to dual 1-inch sensors and 8K/10-bit recording, claims that would make the X6 a potentially meaningful image-quality upgrade for 360 shooters, particularly in low light and when reframing. RedShark News has reported that specification and price context, but the details remain leak-based rather than a complete official specification sheet.

That distinction matters more with a 360 camera than it does with a simple standalone recorder. The camera’s value depends on the whole path from capture to reframed export: app recognition, firmware parity, mobile offload, and editing support all affect whether the promised hardware earns space in a travel kit. The Bucharest report provides an early warning about that path, but it is one buyer’s pre-launch experience, not a verified assessment of launch-day software across regions.

What to check before buying on August 12

The useful launch-day checklist is short: verify Insta360’s official price and included accessories; confirm that the X6 appears in the buyer’s regional store; check that the current Insta360 app lists X6 compatibility; look for the first firmware version and release notes; and confirm the retailer’s shipping date rather than assuming that a live listing means immediate delivery.
